Abel is an excellent late-ripening site in the Deep End of the Anderson Valley which, perfectly compliments the estates’ coastally-influenced, cool-climate vineyards.
Originally planted in 1997, Wentworth has been proud to steward this special site since 2023.
Located just 10.5 miles from the Pacific Ocean, Abel is home to diverse Pinot Noir massal selections spread across 11 planted acres, many of which trace their biological origins to world-renowned historic Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits. In addition to Wentworth Vineyards, Abel has been a vineyard designate source for several well-known California producers.
First planted in 2000, Nash Mill Vineyard is a small site situated above Mill Creek amongst coniferous forest in one of the coolest sections of the Anderson Valley. The vineyard is about 8.5 miles East of Wentworth Vineyard -and approximately twelve miles from the Pacific Ocean in the hills Northwest of Philo.
Since the Wentworth acquisition of the vineyard in 2017, it has been farmed utilizing organic and regenerative methods, yields have been reduced, and has had an acre of Chardonnay grafted to compliment the stellar Pinot. The site hosts a permanent cover crop and has not been tilled in over a decade. In 2022, Wentworth added an experimental block of Blaufränkisch -to assess how the varietal would perform in the Anderson Valley. First vintage was bottled in 2025 for the wine club.
Wentworth Vineyard is a distinct and prized viticultural site located within the coastal redwood forest near the Mendocino Coast. Mark purchased the site above Elk, CA in 2014 with a vision to plant and grow cool climate varietals and make terroir-driven wines.
Just 3.5 miles from the Pacific Ocean, the vineyard is among the Western-most vineyards in the Continental United States and benefits from the maritime influence. Wentworth Vineyard is part of the Mendocino Ridge American Viticultural Area (AVA) at elevations ranging from 1,200 to 1,260 feet. The vineyard is broadly surrounded by an evergreen forest primarily composed of Coastal Redwoods and Douglas Firs.
The maritime influence is a defining dimension to the terroir due to the proximity and impact of the Pacific Ocean. The site is late-ripening due to a particularly cool microclimate within the broader California Coast Range where fog and the coastal winds lower temperatures and bring moisture. Cooling breezes frequently move across the vineyard throughout the growing season. At times the vineyard is engulfed in fog, and other times, perched just above the fog line. The soils are alluvial, with great drainage- very limited top soil resting atop loam and clay, crushed sandstone, fractured shale and ancient seabed.
