Crab season is finally here! In addition to cool air, Anderson Valley’s close proximity to the Mendocino coast also brings fresh seafood, and in winter, that means crab! Luckily for Anderson Valley residents and visitors, we don’t even need to trek to the coast for our crab. Lemons Market, the small country market in Philo, has its own fishing boats. In true country style, when the fishing boats come in, they hang flags in front of the store to advertise the fresh catch.

While Pinot Noirs and sparkling dominate current offerings, Anderson Valley’s foundation as a wine region was based around Alsatian varietals, many of which are still available today. The Valley even established a festival dedicated to white wines and sparkling, which happens every February.
One of the original wineries in the valley (established 1971), Husch Vineyards, started their vineyard with 8 acres planted in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer. They currently produce 22 different wines, including the three original varietals. Husch is not alone in offering a range of wines. Some of the white wines currently grown in Anderson Valley include: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Semillon, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Gewürztraminer.
