Learn More About Riesling

Characteristics of Riesling

Riesling is one of the most expressive and versatile white wine grape varietals, celebrated by winemakers, sommeliers, and wine educators for its high acidity and ability to reflect the terroir in which it is grown. It thrives in various climates, resulting in diverse styles that can be dry, off-dry, sweet, or sparkling and balanced in fruit, floral, and mineral qualities that evolve beautifully over time. Riesling’s adaptability and ageability have earned it a place among the noblest grape varieties in the world, and it found a home in the Anderson Valley in the 1970s.

Regional Expressions

  1. Germany
Elegant and often off-dry with flavors of green apple, citrus, and a steely minerality. Sweet styles are luscious and full bodied, yet balanced by crisp acidity.
  2. Alsace, France
Typically dry and structured with floral, citrus, and stony notes.
  3. Australia (Clare and Eden Valleys)
Zesty and lime-driven with bold acidity and a distinctive clarity.
  4. United States (California, Finger Lakes, Washington)
Diverse styles, from the Finger Lakes’ floral and lean expressions to the lush, fruit-forward Rieslings of Washington State and California’s cool-climate examples like Cole Ranch & Anderson Valley.
  5. Austria:
Often dry, with stone fruit, spice, and vibrant minerality.

Learn More About Bahl Fratty Riesling

Bahl Fratty: A Riesling Born of Passion

Dan Berger’s journey into domestic Riesling began in the 1970s during visits to the Finger Lakes, where he first tasted the grape’s potential in America. His dream of crafting a California Riesling came to fruition in 2022 with Bahl Fratty, Boontling for “great wine.”

Crafted with the expertise of renowned winemakers Greg La Follette and consulting winemaker Peter Bell, Bahl Fratty is a testament to Dan’s vision of a dry, terroir-driven Riesling. Made with grapes from Cole Ranch AVA—the smallest AVA in the United States, known for its cool climate and unique soils—Bahl Fratty highlights bright acidity, delicate aromatics, and a clean, mineral finish.
